Differential responses of coexisting owls to annual small mammal population fluctuations in temperate mixed forest

چکیده
Montane temperate forests in central and southern Europe host diverse small mammal assemblages, but the fluctuations these assemblages correlation with owl predators are still poorly explored. The key questions of our study were how coexisting owls responded to different prey whether any particular species governed predator–prey co-dynamics. We conducted a long-term (2004–2020) low-elevation (300–1100 m above sea level) mixed Beech Silver Fir forest northern Dinaric Alps (central Slovenia). Monitoring data on main groups – mice Muridae, voles Cricetidae, dormice Gliridae shrews Soricidae three Ural Owl Strix uralensis, Tawny aluco Boreal Aegolius funereus collected annually. To find relationships between predator populations, we used two types supervised machine learning approaches addressed predictive modelling tasks multi-target regression. dominant assemblage, Yellow-necked Mouse Apodemus flavicollis, had role determining populations their breeding performance. noted higher sensitivity boreal zone (Boreal Owl), which reach distribution limit Alps, whereas (Tawny Owl) seemed be less affected. In years shortage, was found presumably abandon its territories, suppressed sustained activity by shifting selection. Low-elevation appeared suboptimal habitat for competitive subordinate Owl, may exploit occasional outbreaks habitats even presence larger competitors. Whether can play maintaining threatened cold-adapted face recent ecosystem changes due climate environmental remains an open scientific question.

Assessing mammal responses to perturbations in temperate aridlands of Argentina
Loss of species richness and reduced abundance have been the main responses to perturbations of smalland medium-sized mammals in arid and semi-arid areas. Nonetheless, some mammal species whose habitat requirements are met in disturbed patches may benefit from structural changes in the environment brought about by perturbations. In desert areas of Argentina different mammal responses are attrib...
متن کاملTrait-demography relationships underlying small mammal population fluctuations.
Large-scale fluctuations in abundance are a common feature of small mammal populations and have been the subject of extensive research. These demographic fluctuations are often associated with concurrent changes in the average body mass of individuals, sometimes referred to as the 'Chitty effect'. Despite the long-standing recognition of this phenomenon, an empirical investigation of the underl...
متن کاملHypogeous Ectomycorrhizal Fungal Species on Roots and in Small Mammal Diet in a Mixed-Conifer Forest
The purpose of this study was to estimate the portion of an ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi root community with a hypogeous fruiting habit. We used molecular methods (DNA sequence analysis of the internally transcribed spacer [ITS] region of rDNA) to compare three viewpoints: ECM fungi on the roots in a southern Sierra Nevada Abies-dominated old-growth forest, fungi in scat samples collected from s...
متن کاملElevated CO2 enrichment induces a differential biomass response in a mixed species temperate forest plantation.
In a free-air carbon dioxide (CO(2)) enrichment study (BangorFACE), Alnus glutinosa, Betula pendula and Fagus sylvatica were planted in areas of one-, two- and three-species mixtures (n = 4). The trees were exposed to ambient or elevated CO(2) (580 μmol mol(-1)) for 4 yr, and aboveground growth characteristics were measured. In monoculture, the mean effect of CO(2) enrichment on aboveground woo...
متن کاملOwl winter irruptions as an indicator of small mammal population cycles in the boreal forest of eastern North America
Contrary to what is observed in Fennoscandia, it seems to be widely accepted that small mammals do not exhibit multi-annual population cycles in the boreal forest of North America. However, in the last thirty years, irruptions of vole predators such as owls have been reported by ornithologists south of the North American boreal forest. While such southerly irruptions have been associated in Fen...
